Ellagic Acid: Featured in our Daily Immunity Packs

Ellagic Acid

Ellagic acid is a polyphenol, or micronutrient, found in fruits and vegetables such as: blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, walnuts, pecans, pomegranates, wolfberry, and other plant foods. It is a well-studied polyphenol with numerous health benefits.

Ellagic acid foods possess strong antioxidant, antimutagenic, and anticancer properties. Several studies on mice have found that ellagic acid also may have helped to treat alcoholic liver disease.

Antioxidant Properties

Ellagic acid is well known for its antioxidant properties, meaning it removes toxins from your body and protects against harmful molecules known as free radicals. Plants also produce this antioxidant compound as a defense mechanism against infection and pests.

Free radicals are compounds that can cause harm if their levels become too high in your body. They’re linked to multiple illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. The body has its own antioxidant defenses to keep free radicals in check. However, antioxidants are also found in food, especially in fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based, whole foods. Several vitamins, such as vitamins E and C, are also effective antioxidants.

Essentially, antioxidants are molecules that fight these harmful free radicals and prevent oxidative damage to cells. Ellagic acid is not only a strong antioxidant protecting against free radical damage—it also protects against damage to DNA. One study investigating several substances effect on DNA showed that there was a reduction of H2O2- and Bleomycin-induced DNA damage due to Ellagic acid. This makes it a wonderful micronutrient for protecting damage to cells from numerous potential causes.

Reduces Inflammation

Inflammation is a natural response of the body. However, when inflammation is prolonged over time it may lead to numerous health issues. Ellagic acid has been shown to be an effective anti-inflammatory agent helping to reduce inflammation in the body.

A 2010 study examined the protective effects of ellagic acid on collagen and inflammatory responses in UV-exposed mice and human skin cells. In the study, researchers applied a topical ellagic acid solution to hairless mice. The mice were then exposed to UV light for eight weeks. Results showed ellagic acid prevented inflammation and collagen breakdown that causes wrinkles.

Research also shows ellagic acid as a powerful agent against diseases such as pancreatitis. In another animal study, rats were fed a diet influenced by ellagic acid to examine inflammation and fibrosis. Results showed that rats fed ellagic acid versus those treated with a different diet experienced reduced pancreatic inflammation.

Summary

When talking about medicine and health, there are numerous ellagic acid benefits. Ellagic acid is one of our key ingredients in our Daily Immunity Packs and is truly a one of a kind nutrient.
