Zuma Nutrition’s new Relaxation Blend is a powerful combination of organic herbs renowned for their medicinal properties. Our team has formulated this blend to not only be an effective aid in supporting a relaxed body and mind, but also to offer the body high quality nourishment on a cellular level. Let’s take a look at what makes this blend so unique.
Benefits of Ashwaganda
Ashwaganda, the first ingredient in our relaxation blend, is an ancient herb that has incredible health benefits. It is classified as an “adaptogen” which means that it helps the body adapt to stress. It is also known to lower blood sugar levels, reduce cortisol, boost brain function, and help fight symptoms of anxiety and depression. It has been used for thousands of years, and is one of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine. In one study done on chronically stressed adults, those who supplemented with ashwaganda had significantly greater reductions of the stress hormone cortisol. Those taking the highest dose had a 30% reduction on average.
The next ingredient in our relaxation blend is Moringa leaf, another plant that has been praised for its health benefits for thousands of years. Being very rich in healthy antioxidants and bioactive plant compounds, Moringa helps to eliminate free radicals from the body that cause oxidative stress, which is often associated with chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Moringa also contains anti-inflammatory compounds known as isothiocyanates, which help to reduce swelling and inflammation in the body.
Gotu Kola: Ayurvedic Herb
Gotu kola, another ancient ayurvedic herb, is known as the “herb of longevity” for its many health benefits and medicinal properties. Researchers in an animal study from 2016 found that gotu kola had an anti-anxiety effect on male mice that were sleep deprived for 72 hours. Mice that were given gotu kola for five consecutive days before undergoing sleep deprivation experienced significantly less anxiety-like behavior. They also experienced improved locomotor activity and less oxidative damage. Gotu kola’s positive effect on brain function may also make it an effective antidepressant. A review from 2016 supports these findings, in part due to a study on 33 people with generalized anxiety disorder. The participants were asked to take gotu kola in place of their antidepressant medication for 60 days. They self-reported decreased stress, anxiety, and depression.
Healing Properties of Tulsi
Tulsi, another herb in our relaxation blend, has gone by numerous names throughout history. It has been called “Holy Basil,” "The Incomparable One" and the "Elixir of Life." The incredible healing properties of this herb show that it is worthy of its many impressive titles. Tulsi is a powerful adaptogenic herb, which helps in the reduction of stress and stabilization of the mind. It is anti-inflammatory, high in antioxidants, immune-modulating (able to increase or decrease the immune system's activity to the optimal level), and has antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties that are comparable to diazepam and other antidepressant drugs.
Amla, or Indian gooseberry, is an extremely sour, nutritious fruit of a tree which grows in India, the Middle East, and a few other Southeast Asian countries. Due to its powerful antioxidant properties, it is often used as in Ayurvedic medicines to boost skin and hair health, and also overall immunity of the body. Due to the many phenolic compounds in Amla, it is a powerful antioxidant, helping the body to recover from oxidative stress.
Ginger has long been recognized for its soothing qualities, as well as its properties of improving digestion, helping those suffering from nausea, and reducing inflammation in the body. It is high in gingerol, a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and has also been shown to reduce muscle pain and soreness in the body.
Turmeric is also in the Zingiberaceae family, making it a close cousin of ginger. Like ginger, turmeric is also well known for its anti-inflammatory and medicinal qualities. It has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb, and recently, science has started to back up what Indians have known for a long time — that turmeric really does contain compounds with powerful healing properties. These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin, which is known to have powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant, helping to fight chronic inflammation in the body. Curcumin has also shown some promise in treating depression. In a controlled trial, 60 people with depression were randomized into three groups. One group took Prozac, another group took one gram of curcumin, and the third group took both Prozac and curcumin. After 6 weeks, curcumin had led to improvements that were similar to Prozac. According to this small study, curcumin is as effective as an antidepressant. Depression is also linked to reduced levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and a shrinking hippocampus, a brain area with a role in learning and memory. Curcumin boosts BDNF levels, potentially reversing some of these changes. There is also some evidence that curcumin can boost the brain neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine.
Finally, the last herb in our medicinal blend is Fenugreek, an interesting herb with diverse uses and many health benefits. Fenugreek has been shown to balance cholesterol, soothe upset stomach and digestive problems, reduce menstrual cramps, maintain liver and kidney health, soothe muscle pain, and even reduce fever.
